Spirit of the Sands Band Handbook

AWARDS AND CERTIFICATES

The Spirit Corps is a strong believer in rewarding the talent and commitment of its members. As the program has grown, so too have the variety and number of awards that students can earn. The awards are designed to show appreciation for the hard work for all students but also to ensure that the awards reflect the correct level of commitment and participation. Students earn the awards through active involvement in the ensembles class work in ‘regular’ daily band classes are not reflected by these awards.

• First year Certificate: Marching and Symphonic Bands

• Second Year: Band Letter for Marching Band (two semesters) and Symphonic Band (two semesters)

• Third Year: Bars for letterman jackets (three semesters)

• Four Year: Instrument or Flag pins (four semesters)

Additionally, students may earn:

• 4 year plaque - marching band and/or symphonic band

• Medal of recognition: Production Band, Musical Pit Band, Fanfare Trumpets, Winterguard, etc.

• The highest award is earning the Graduate Sash which is given to Graduates of the Spirit of the Sands who have participated for four consecutive semesters of Marching Band and four consecutive semesters of symphonic band and must be a member in good standing.  Attendance at all rehearsals and performances are basic tenets as well as a positive attitude than focuses on helping and benefitting others. There are some provisions for students who transferred from other schools, who entered the program late, or who have extenuating circumstances to earn their graduate sash.* The process for receiving a sash went through two years of review and approval by both parent’s organizations and the Associated Student Body in order to be included as part of the graduation process.

These awards are provided through Booster fundraising: students are not charged for their letters or awards.

Students in our program have also received Certificates of Congressional Recognition, State Assembly, State Senate, Congressional Senate, and a host of other awards due to their participation in International Tours representing the United States.

Please Note: All criteria for awarding of awards is subject to revision and change.
